Does Connection Latency Affect How Long 1-on-1 Video Chats Last?

A slow connection can freeze a face mid-sentence. This study compares the round-trip latency of a call against how long the conversation actually lasted — and states plainly what that comparison can and cannot tell us.

Read this first: this study can only show an association between latency and conversation length. It does not prove that latency causes people to leave — slower networks, older devices, and many other factors travel together.

The Research Question

When the connection between two people is fast, do their conversations last longer than when it is slow? We group sessions by measured network latency and compare conversation outcomes across those groups.

What We Measure

Calls on GazeVideo run over the Agora RTC SDK. Network metrics come from the SDK’s statistics interface, mapped into round-trip time (RTT) buckets:

  • Under 100 ms
  • 100–200 ms
  • 200–300 ms
  • 300 ms and above

For each bucket we compute four aggregate outcomes:

  • Median conversation duration
  • Skip rate — share of sessions that ended by skipping
  • 60-second rate — share of sessions still active at the 60-second checkpoint
  • Connection error rate — share of sessions that ended with a connection failure

Sampling and cleaning rules are documented in the research methodology.

Sample Threshold

Results are published only after at least 500 valid sessions have been collected and the aggregate numbers have passed operator review. Below that line, this page shows the study design — not results.

Currently collecting data. This study has not yet reached its sample threshold, so no numbers are published on this page. Check back after the first collection window closes, or read the methodology in the meantime.
